Here are a few examples of the many museums and exhibitions that are found in Innere Stadt; the Old Town of Vienna.

Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Art)

Kunsthistorisches Museum

This is one of the world´s most renowned art museums and the building itself, which is a palace, is also magnificient.

Examples of what you can find in here:

  • The Habsburg Art Collection, which includes works of painters such as Raphael, Caravaggio, Bosch and Titian.
  • Ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman art
  • The Coin & Medals Collection

If you want to make more than one visit (there is plenty to see here!), look in to the option of getting an annual unlimited pass instead of paying per day.

Neue Hofburg

Neue Hofburg

This is the newest, and also largest, section of the Imperial Palace. It contains three branches of the museum of Fine Arts + an Ethnological Museum.

Schatzkammer

Schatzkammer

Located in the Neue Hofburg, this is the Imperial Treasury, also known as the Secular and Ecclesiastical Tresures. This is the place to go if you want to see the old imperial dynasty´s crowns, jewellery and other magnificient valuables that are on display in twenty magnificent rooms.

The Schatzkammer is formally a part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, so you can get a ticket that covers admission to both.

Museum am Schottenstift (Museum at the Scottish Monastery)

Museum am Schottenstift

This is a small exhibition of main Baroque Austrian paintings.

Gemäldegalerie

Gemäldegalerie

Among other things, this gallery exhibits medieval and Renaissance paintings, including some by Hieronymus Bosch. It is located within the Academy of Fine Arts.

This museum is decicated to contemporary art and applied arts, and includes contemporary works of art, design and architecture.

Albertina

This old palace now exhibits both old and modern art, including a renowned drawing collection. Several works of the Renaissance painter Dürer is on display at Albertina.

Jewish Museum

This museum is dedicated to the history of Vienna´s Jewish community and its notable individuals, such as Freud, Schoenberg, Mahler, and Herzl. The combined ticket will give you access to two museum sites and the main synagogue.

Haus der Musik (House of Music)

Haus der Musik

This museum is about Vienna as a focal point for music, and it will teach you about the history of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as well as famous composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, Mahler, and more. This is a fairly new museum with a lot of interactive features, sound experiences and an experimental section for futuristic composition.
